And even while it’s been one of the warmest Winter seasons in recent memory, nothing says ‘I love you’ more than drinking and dining beside the warm glow of a roaring fire. But only a select group of restaurants and bars in New York boast working fireplaces. Here are a few of our faves.

TOP PICK

Ciano (45 East 22nd Steet; 212.982.8422): Here at Shea Gallante’s standout Italian in Flatiron the massive roaring fireplace in the back of the main dining room creates an elegant and warm ambience. But it’s not just for atmospherics, the fireplace here is also used to warm and toast bread. But it’s the flavor-filled, rustic-style Italian cooking that has been winning Chef Gallante praise at Ciano. And he has put together quite the Valentine’s Day menu to celebrate this special occasion (4-course prix fixe includes selection of assaggini to start; $95 per guest).

OTHER TOP CHOICES FOR VALENTINE’S DAY FIREPLACE DINING

One if By Land, Two if By Sea (West Village)

The Place (West Village)

The House (Gramercy Park)

Casa La Femme (West Village)

21 Club (Midtown West)

Asellina (Murray Hill)

La Petite Maison (Midtown West)

Lambs Club (Midtown West)

Crown (Upper East Side)

Per Se (Midtown West)

Continuing right where we left off with our Top 50 Bites of 2011…

#40 Mexcian Falafel Handbag Sandwich at Crisp and Crisp on Wheels

Many of the bites on this list represent our tried and true go-to’s and this is one of ‘em. I probably had this Mexican falafel sandwich from Crisp via Seamless Web and Crisp on Wheels (when parked on 51st b/t Park & Mad) at least 20 times this past year. Middle Eastern meets Mexican as the falafel is paired with cilantro pesto, avocado, corn, salsa, nachos with jalapeño dressing.

#39 Authentic Belgian Frietjes (frites) with Housemade Dipping Sauces at Eulogy Belgian Tavern (Philadelphia)

These very well may be the best friggin’ frites we’ve ever had. Most people head to Eulogy for the unreal beer selection, but it’s these authentic double fried Flemish Belgian style frites that we crave and keep comin’ back for. All the housemade dipping sauces are brimming with the flavor. Don’t miss the spicy bourbon sauce!

#38 Foie Gras with Cinco Cebollas at Casa Mono

This dreamy, seared foie gras is piled high above two crostini and covered in balsamic vinegar. Pierce through the slightly crispy surface and through the beautifully fatty foie and continue down further where creamy leeks, a flower of red onion, long sliced green onions, pickled cipollinis and scallions await your fork. Do yourself a favor and sit at the bar where you can watch the chefs at work and smell the searing foie as it’s being prepared.

#37 The Funghi Mussels at Flex Mussels

One of our Friday night go-to’s is sitting at the bar and having dinner and drinks at the Flex Mussels on UES. They do mussels 23 different ways, but our favorite is the Funghi with wild mushrooms, double smoked bacon, garlic and cream. They bring you out a massive steaming pot that is chock full o’ chunks of bacon, mushrooms, a not-too-thick cream and 20-25 mussels. The smokiness from the bacon and the umami from the mushrooms in this garlicky sauce is a match made in heaven. You’re gonna want to order a side of fries and ask for extra bread to mop up the soupy amazingness waiting for you at the bottom.

#36 Pat LaFrieda Short Rib Burgers at Home via Fresh Direct

We were lucky enough to get our hands on 10 lb’s worth of Pat LaFrieda’s much balleyhooed black label blend a couple of summers ago. For three weeks, we grilled some of the most amazing burgers we’ve ever had. We were psyched to see LaFrieda begin offering his burger blends via Fresh Direct in Summer 2009. Ever since, at least one Sunday a month we stay in and grill up some of these bad boys. Our trick is to re-form the patties adding some kosher salt and pepper. I’ve got my grill down to a science and the finished product is a beautiful medium rare that we’d put up against any burger in the city.

#35 Souvlaki from Thanassis (Athens, Greece)

We got a tip from our flight attendant as we were just about to land in Athens back in May. She said “run, don’t walk” to Thanassis in central Athens for all-around great Greek classics, including the best kebob and souvlaki Athens has to offer. We did just that and for all of $8 US, we got a Greek salad, a side of tsatsiki, a kebob and a souvlaki and damn if it wasn’t the best souvlaki we’ve ever had.

#34 King Crab Fried Rice with Black Truffles at Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill (Las Vegas)

The Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino served as our playground of food and drink for 4 days while we were held over in Vegas due to Irene. I can safely say I’ve never ever had a fried rice dish like this before. While not inexpensive at $55, this fried rice was loaded with mushrooms, truffles and juicy crabmeat. It had this sweet earthiness to it that truly blew us away. It didn’t hurt that we were buzzin’ from some amazing cocktails down in the lobby bar. Don’t miss this dish if you’re in Vegas. If you don’t see it on the menu, ask if they’re serving it. Thank us later.

#33 Sugar Pumpkin Risotto with Braised Chestnut & Duck Confit at Monkey Bar (lunch menu)

The new team at Monkey Bar has taken things up several notches and I’m happy to work a block away and to live just 2 blocks away. It’s become our go-to place for meeting friends and family for a cocktail and bite to eat at the bar, and on slower days at work I’ve started to explore the lunch menu a bit. Executive Chef Damon Wise is churning out some superb dishes, and I’ve been taken by his pasta offerings of late. In particular, the seasonal Sugar Pumpkin Risotto w/ Duck Confit made for a quite pleasing lunch experience a few weeks back. It combines just about everything I love about Autumn into one bowl. The rich gaminess of the duck confit together with the sweet sugary pumpkin flavor is something special to behold. We’re looking forward to checking out more of Monkey Bar’s menu in coming months, like the pork belly with crispy oyster and kimchi.

#32 Oyster Pan Roast with Uni Butter Crostini at The John Dory Oyster Bar

We’ve been all about bar seating and small plate grazing in 2011 and this is why we love the John Dory. One of our top small plates of the year is their oyster pan roast w/ uni toast. Imagine a thick layer of uni spread over a crunchy piece of toast that’s hovering over a rich, creamy oyster soup garnished with herbs, a drizzle of olive oil and a bit of paprika. Now, take your uni toast for a little dive into said rich, creamy oyster soup and you will be in heaven. What truffles are to the land, this small plate is to the sea!

#31 Spicy Pork Kimchi at Ariyoshi Izakaya

Ok, so here’s another small plate standout from 2011. The server recommended the spicy pork kimchi and are we ever so grateful she did. It’s probably the best spicy dish we had in all of 2011. If you like your food with a kick, you should make it over to Ariyoshi and give this pork kimchi a try.

We spend the holiday each year here in the city with our families. There are tons of restaurants that offer great meals on Turkey Day. In the past, we’ve had terrific Thanksgiving dinners at places like Dylan Prime, Primehouse NY, Atlantic Grill and Blue Water Grill. Here’s a list we’ve compiled of our top recommendations for spending Thanksgiving dinner in the city, with options around town arranged by price-point (less than $50; $50-74; $75-100 & $100+). We’ve included links to Thanksgiving menus as available. Oh, and be sure to check back — we’re adding more restaurants and Thanksgiving menu details on a daily basis! p.s. for those entertaining at home, we also feature some special take-out options at the end of the list. Where are we heading for Thanksgiving dinner this year, you ask?

We’re heading to the new location of The Smith in Midtown East where they’re offering a 3-course Thanksgiving Day Dinner for $45/person with loads of choices and lots of fixings.

Our Tried & True Thanksgiving Spots

Atlantic Grill (UES & Lincoln Center) — Offering a $45 prix-fixe dinner. The menus differ slightly at each location. UWS location at 49 W. 64th St.; 212-787-4663; UES location at 1341 Third Ave.; 212.988.9200 Click here for menus >>

Blue Water Grill (Union Square) — Offering a $45 prix-fixe feast. Also special wines by the glass and bottle. 31 Union Square West at 16th St; 212-675-9500 Click here for menu >>

Primehouse NY (Gramercy) — Offering a turkey dinner prix-fixe in addition to the regular menu ($45/adult). 381 Park Avenue South at 27th Street; 212-824-2600 Click here to see menu >>

Dylan Prime (Tribeca) — Dylan Prime does a great turkey dinner in a plush, comfortable setting. This year they are offering a Thanksgiving-style prix-fixe between 1-9 p.m. for $50 per person. Corkage is $20/bottle if you want to BYO. 62 Laight St; 212-334-4783 Click here to see menu >>

So, you’ve missed the boat on those NYC hot spots that allow you to book two months in advance (or more). Oops. Now is your chance to snag a ressie at one of the city’s most romantic eateries that allow you to book one month in advance. Remember, for better or worse Valentine’s Day is a busy night around town so call as soon as the phone lines open. Some ideas for those who want to (or need to) go all-out: The River Café, Daniel, Babbo, Eleven Madison Park, and Gramercy Tavern (well, EMP and GT are 28 days in advance). Being that Valentine’s Day falls on a Monday this year, it may make things a bit easier for all of us who wait ‘til the last minute. When we called La Grenouille, they still had a 5:30 pm table available. Gods speed. NB: For those who are thinking of popping the question on V-Day, we hear that the Kellari Restaurants will give you free dinner for life on Valentine’s Day if you propose at one of their two Manhattan eateries.

We love spending the holiday with our families in the city. We can’t quite host a dinner for 12+ people in our apartment, but thankfully there are lots of restaurants around the city that offer great meals and deals on Turkey Day. We enjoyed a great meal (and free BYO wine deal) at Dylan Prime last year. We have also been very happy with our Thanksgiving dinners at Primehouse and Blue Water Grill. In general, the BR Guest restaurants do a great job with their Turkey prix-fixe meals, which they offer at a very affordable price. Here’s a list we’ve compiled of our top recommendations for spending Thanksgiving dinner in the city, with options around town arranged by price-point ($50 and less; $50-75; $75-100 & $100+)…

Last week, Andy and I headed to Colin Cowie’s apartment for a cocktail party courtesy of Electrolux ICON and, of course, Colin Cowie. We got to see Colin’s amazing new Flatiron digs (decked out with some premium Electrolux ICON appliances), taste some delicious and easy to make appetizers, drink Colin’s signature fall drink, and chat with Colin about holiday entertaining and about his top local restaurant picks (Boqueria, Devi and Periyali). For all the details on what we learned, tasted, and drank, continue reading after the jump…

The scene:

Colin has outdone himself in transforming a two story Flatiron penthouse into the ultimate party pad. As soon as we entered the apartment, we were ushered into a stylish formal living room equipped with a remote controlled fireplace, incredible sound system, dramatic lighting, and the ever important bar (equipped with the Electrolux ICON under-counter wine cooler, and other shiny, sleek appliances). We started off with a couple of glasses of wine but overheard the bartender mention the signature “Autumn Pear Passion” cocktail (described below) and switched over to that. Colin graciously greeted each guest and offered to take us on a tour of his apartment.

The highlights of the apartment for me were the stylish and colorful furniture, the state of the art sound system and lighting (with touch screens in each room that control the whole place), and the innovative use of space that was perfectly designed for entertaining. For example, the beautifully mirrored wall of the formal dining room could disappear with one quick push to transform the room into an open party space that flows into the kitchen. A serving bar also appears from underneath the kitchen’s island to create yet another dimension to the space. Behind each wall, we found storage space meticulously organized. From Colin’s collection of fine china and stemware, to his draws full of silver and serving trays, I felt like I had jumped into one of Colin’s books.

Colin did a quick demonstration on how he prepared for the party without having much time after a full day of travelling, and he gave us some of his holiday entertaining tips. Then it was time to mingle and enjoy the party.

The food:

- Sausage rolls served with Worcestershire sauce: Colin keeps a tray of these frozen so he is always ready to pop them in his Electrolux ICON double wall oven (which was pretty impressive- equipped with special “smooth glide” racks that extend with a touch of a finger) for an impromptu get together.

- Spice-dusted toasted nuts: Boy were these spicy, but also lovely for a crisp fall evening. Pick up 1 pound raw peanuts, almonds, and macadamia nuts and sautée them in olive oil until browned (4 to 5 minutes). Then dust them with ground coriander, cumin, cayenne pepper, freshly ground black pepper, and salt and toast the dusted nuts some more (2 to 3 minutes).

- Beef Samosas: Another frozen dish ready to go for guests at a moments notice. I loved the spicy chili dip that accompanied them.

- Cheeses, Salumi, Sliced Baguette, Crackers, and Fresh Fruit: All beautifully presented on lovely cheese boards and serving trays.

- Classic Shrimp Cocktail: Colin said that you can never go wrong with this classic- especially when the shrimp are this gorgeous (and gigantic). The silver shrimp cocktail serving bowl mad a big difference too- beautiful presentation.

- Cape Brandy Tart with Brandy Sauce: The sauce was being whipped as the tarts were coming out of the oven.

The drink:

- Autumn Pear Passion: Colin always recommends a signature cocktail, and his was a seasonal pear cocktail. 2 oz. vodka, ½ pear liqueur, 2 oz. puree of pear nectar- combine ingredients and ice in a shaker, strain into a cocktail glass, and add a dash of cinnamon and a pear slice for garnish.

Colin’s “Top Tips for a Chic Holiday Season”:

Colin provided us with some holiday entertaining tips. Some of the highlights are:

- Decorate with style: When decorating, keep a thread of style by identifying your look and color. Have it run from the wreath on the front door, to the garland over your fireplace or stair banister to the focal point, bringing it to your tree and keep it going on your dining table.

- Keep it simple: Use sleek, unscented candles at the dinner table- they’ll create a relaxing vibe without interfering with the pleasing, delicious aroma of the prepared meal.

- Set the mood: Create a fun and inviting atmosphere for you and your guests with festive music, dimmed lights and candles. Be ready with a glass of something fabulous and a couple of good stories to tell when your guests arrive.

- Mix vs. Match: It’s all about mixing and less about matching. Break out the good china for guests and if you’re short on quantity, mix it up with your everyday china. Sometimes it’s fun to set the table with alternating styles of place settings if you don’t have enough glasses and dishes to serve all your guests.

- Specialty cocktail: Make something unique for your guests by serving a specialty cocktail- you can save time by preparing a few pitchers before the party.

The Gift Bag:

It’s always nice to send your guests home with a little treat. I’ve been to dinner parties where the host had a couple of muffins in a paper bag with a colorful bow ready for us as we left. You certainly make quite a great impression when your guests bite into a tasty muffin for breakfast the day after your dinner party. Colin and Electrolux ICON sent us home with Colin Cowie’s new book, “Colin Cowie Chic, The Guide to Life as it should be” and all the recipes Colin used to make his apps, drink, and dessert. Always a classy touch.
