Guess the philosophy is that if fewer people are dining out during the recession, then restaurants would at least like you to be preparing and eating their food at home. First, we heard that Primehouse New York is offering its dry-aged steaks-to-go. Through Labor Day Weekend, you can pick-up BBQ-ready, dry-aged USDA prime steaks from Primehouse. Each steak-to-go comes with a complimentary side, Primehouse ‘s own steak sauce and grilling tips and recipes. They are offering 10 different cuts and 5 different sides are available. Check out Primehouse’s Steaks-to-Go Menu here. You only have to order 1-hour in advance of when you want to pick up your steaks. Just yesterday, we heard that Smith & Wollensky has begun offering a similar steaks-to-go program, also through Labor Day Weekend. S&W is offering two cuts to go: USDA Prime, dry-aged sirloin (14 oz / $39 a piece) and USDA Prime, dry-aged filet mignon (10 oz / $39 a piece). Pera and Lobel’s meats-to-go after the jump…All you have to do is call the restaurant at 212-753-1530 at least 24 hours in advance to place the order, and your steaks will be packed in a green, insulated bag with the Smith & Wollensky logo, complete with a bottle of Smith & Wollensky steak sauce and gel ice packs to keep the meat cool until you reach your destination. It’s not only steakhouses that are offering food-to-go. Pera Mediterranean Brasserie is offering a Mediterranean Meats-to-Go program at extremely reasonable prices. Pera’s signature lamb “adana” (only $12 for 10 oz) and soujouk shish (only $7 for 7 oz) are trimmed, marinated, skewered and vacuum-packed for you. Your order also comes with cooking tips. A 7oz feta and herb stuffed lamburger patty is just $7. See the rest of the to-go menu here. In addition to meats, Pera is also offering picnics-to-go. For $21, you get a mezze platter, choice of brochette (add $4 for lamb), mixed pickled vegetables and pistachio baklava. Each basket comes with napkins and flatware and can be ordered as little as 30 min before your desired pick-up time. Then, of course, there’s Lobel’s, the famed butcher that is offering its steaks-to-go in refrigerated cased at the new Yankee Stadium. Someone please let me know when Minetta Tavern offers their black label LaFrieda burgers to-go!

Our favorite tv show starts up again tonight on Bravo at 10pm. Needless to say, we’re pretty psyched. We’ll be keeping with tradition from last season and preparing a home-cooked meal beforehand to enjoy while we watch the show…and what’s a Top Chef premiere without a recession special value wine. On tonight’s menu is Tabla tikka-marinated chicken breasts on the grill, caramelized broccoli with garlic, and one of Jill’s famous salads. As for the wine, we will be trying a value riesling, which we heard pairs nicely with spicy Indian food. We’ll let you know which one we try and how it is. For those of you without cable, you can watch with Colicchio himself, who will be hanging out and eating dinner in the lounge at his Craftsteak during the show’s airing. Craftsteak is extending their bar menu ’til 11, when it ends. We’ve been hearing some good things about the $15 and under bar menu, from the burger, with its layer of balsamic onions, to some of the best smoked chicken wings in town.

We really enjoyed this under $15 red Bordeaux blend of 90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc. For those of you not familiar with Fronsac, it is a wine region, i.e. appelation, in Bordeaux that sits side by side with St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is less well known than its famed neighbours but is a good match for them. Fronsac is known for wines that are made with great care but don’t cost a fortune. With a super vintage like ’05, you can score some great Bordeaux wines from Fronsac and other not so well known areas that won’t break your bank.
