About Us

Jill and Andy Freedman

We’re a newly-wed couple living in Midtown. We are passionate about all things food and wine. We realize times are a bit tougher and wallets are a bit tighter now than they were a year ago, but we’re not gonna let that stop us from taking advantage of the foremost food and wine destination in the world.  We thought it would be fun for us, and insightful for you, to see how we can still manage to “wine and dine” over the next 365 days without breaking the bank.

Food lovers don’t have to sacrifice their sophisticated palates during tough economic times. We all love cheap falafels and $1 pizza slices, but there’s no reason to go from tasting menus to mac & cheese (unless its Waverly Inn’s truffled mac and cheese) when so many great deals are available.

If we had started this blog a year ago, we would have posted about some of our favorite over-the-top dining experiences, including a 12-course tasting meal at the Chef’s Table at Gordon Ramsay’s at The London, a 4+ hour dining experience at Per Se, a truffle tasting menu at Babbo,  multiple visits to Blue Hill at Stone Barns and brunches at Equus, and also a gluttonous trip to France for our honeymoon, where we ate and drank our way through Bordeaux and Paris.  You get the point…  Unfortunately,  all this wining and dining comes with a steep price tag when you live in Manhattan.   However, we’re not giving up our food and wine lifestyle anytime soon just ’cause the economy is tanking.

Our mission is to hit the streets of Manhattan (and surrounding areas) with our new budget-conscious mindset (and digital camera) in tow, and then post about all of our food and wine experiences…with an occasional splurge night out and culinary getaway weekend thrown in here and there.  We will seek out the city’s best BYOBs, all-you-can drink brunch specials, free wine tastings, recession specials and much more.  We will also be reaching out to restaurants to see if we can make a difference- like getting our favorite places to substitute a glass of wine for a dessert on their restaurant week menus.

So stay tuned and follow a year in the life of a couple of foodies on a shoestring…

Shoot us an email at either:

Jill and Andy, I miss you. Rather, I miss eating and drinking with you, specifically in Manhattan. While Los Angeles has the beaches, sun, and low-priced Mexican fare, it has earthquakes, forest fires, and a dearth of decent, conveniently-located dining and drinking establishments. Could you kindly start an LA edition?

    Cordial,
    Michael D. Ross

    Andy and Jill,

Just came across your blog and must commend you for a job well done. I posted a link to your article “NYC Restaurants & Bars Step Up Relief Efforts For Haiti” in the “Chefs Lair” LinkedIn group. Andy, thanks for taking the time to write it.

I welcome you both (and anyone else interested in good food with family and friends) to join the Chef’s Lair LinkedIn Group (http://www.linkedin.com/groups?home=&gid=2556946) as another way for you to expand readership to your excellent blog. The group just started but will be growing.

Thanks again for the great work!

    Regards,
    al
