What’s the Deal: SD26
In our What’s the Deal segment we bring to light some new deals and specials being offered at restaurants around the city. This week we take a look at SD26 (19 E 26th St off Madison Sq Park), the downtown successor to San Domenico, run by Tony May and his daughter Marisa. Unlike its clasically-styled predecessor, SD26 goes for the avant-garde with cutting-edge design and technology in the form of a self-service wine bar featuring a state-of-the-art Enomatic wine dispenser, iPad wine lists and a salumi station. The menu, which is split into food groups as opposed to courses, also ventures off the beaten Italian path, with most dishes available in small and large portions to accommodate those who wish to share. SD26 has been doing more in the way of weekly specials and nightly deals than other restaurants of its caliber. Seven days a week, SD26 is offering a $32.50 pre-theatre menu from 5:30-8pm and a three-course greenmarket-based Sunday Supper for $32.50 all evening on Sundays. Monday through Friday they are offering a $26 two-course prix-fixe lunch in addition to their daily $27.50 “Il Quadrifoglio Lunch”—a one-course Italian bento box of sorts, featuring four mini-courses in a compartmented tray (courses change daily). They’ve also extended their $24.10 Restaurant Week lunch menu through September 3rd. Late night is when SD26 starts doling out the freebies in the wine bar and lounge. Snack at the bar on some complimentary house-made Pizza Bianca, made fresh every hour on the hour all night long, and when you order a cocktail after 10pm, you’ll get a complimentary Bomboloni (Italian doughnut) hot from the kitchen. But they don’t stop there, come 11pm, it’s time for a late-night snack of complimentary pasta (changes nightly). On Pizza Monday’s, SD26 offers a selection of authentic house-made pizzas, including a pizza with seafood topped with calamari, mussels and octopus and one with fresh-shaved artichokes (selections change weekly). On the weekends, there’s live jazz in the wine bar and lounge (9pm-1am on Fri & Sat and 7-10pm on Sun). And to accompany the music, they offer complimentary calamarata pasta with basil and fresh tomatoes. With its good food, great hospitality and lively atmosphere, there’s lots to love about SD26.
