Restaurant Week Alternative: Supper’s $15.95 “Simple Supper”
Now that Summer Restaurant Week in NYC is almost upon us, our inboxes have been flooded with a slew of emails promoting the 3-course $24.07 lunches and $35 dinners that will be served up at 200+ restaurants between July 12-25. We certainly love a good deal and know we can find some pretty good ones during Restaurant Week, but this got us thinking about all those amazing (and better) deals out there that are often overlooked in all the Restaurant Week madness. Case in point — Monday night we headed to Supper Restaurant for the $15.95 “Simple Supper,” a deal (and dinner) that really blew us away. It may be time to abandon scouring Open Table for the remaining Restaurant Week reservations and to head down to the E. Village for a “Simple Supper” instead.
Andy and I had heard about the $15.95 two course “Simple Supper” dinner served Mondays through Wednesdays from 4 to 7 pm at the neighborhood Italian favorite, Supper (156 East 2nd St. between A & B). Being that we had the day off and were craving a traditional rustic Italian meal, we headed to Supper at around 5 pm for an early dinner. From start to finish, we were hugely impressed with the $15.95 “Simple Supper” and also with the $4 house white (Pinot Grigio) and red (Montepulciano) wines and $4 beer that were offered with the Simple Supper. Also, if you love dessert, you can opt for a dessert option instead of your appetizer course for the same price.
We sat at the bar overlooking the open kitchen and both started out with the $4 house Pinot Grigio (cool, crisp and refreshing on such a hot summer night). We were served amazing rustic country bread with a fabulous complimentary Italian bean topping- hugely flavorful with robust garlic, zingy citrus notes, and fragrant olive oil. Very nice touch. We piled the crusty bread high with the beans and then soaked up the olive oil with the remainder of the bread when we were done.
Both Andy and I ordered the Crostini to start. You have an option of Mushroom Crostini or the traditional Vine Ripe Tomato Crostini. I would recommend that you order one of each (which we both did). We saw the bread grilling and mushrooms sautéing right in front of us. The crostini was excellent- the plentiful rich earthy mushrooms falling to the plate as we took our first bites. The tomato crostini was also delicious- with light fresh basil and a hint of garlic (certainly not overpowering).
For course no. 2, I ordered the Penne Siciliano al Forno, a dish with a bright fresh Tomato Sauce, Eggplant, and melted Mozzarella. It was just what I wanted – perfectly al dente pasta with light creamy melted mozzarella. I also loved the fact that the cheese and eggplant did not overwhelm the pasta.
Andy had the Pork alla Parmigiana served with classic Spaghetti in Tomato & Basil sauce. Both portions were large, but Andy’s was just massive considering its price tag. He thoroughly enjoyed it and then made sure to get a doggie bag for the remainder of the dish. We paired our entrees with glasses of the $4 house red (Montepulciano).
This is really a deal that you cannot miss. The food is excellent, reliable, rustic neighborhood Italian fare, and the price tag just can’t be beaten. We will certainly be back. This “Simple Supper” deal is worth skipping happy hour for any day of the week (well, any Monday through Wednesday that is), and I would take this dinner and wine special over most any of the recent restaurant week dinners I have had.
