Beer of the Week: Peekskill Rosemary’s Baby

Published by Jill at 10:20 am under Beer of the Week

Now, Andy and I have been enjoying a ton of great craft beer this summer. We hit up Bear Republic, Lagunitas, and Russian River breweries while we were out in California last month and also made it to Dogfish Head brewery with the folks from Rattle N Hum a couple weeks back.  So, we thought why not highlight some of the awesome beers that we drink every week? Our first “beer of the week” is going to be quite a surprise to those of you who know my obsession with hoppy IPAs and Andy’s current interest in sours.  For a great smooth drinking summer brew, we chose a local, light, refreshing summer beer that we tried this past weekend at The Peekskill Brewery (55 Hudson Avenue, Peekskill, NY) called Rosemary’s Baby

Wined & Dined’s Quick Tasting Notes

Brewery: The Peekskill Brewery

Brewmaster: Neill Acer

Region: Northeastern, USA (Westchester county)

Style: Belgian Golden Ale

ABV: 6.0%

Price: $7 for 12 oz. draft (or you can get a taste as part of a 4 flight tasting for $10)

Color/Appearance: Pale straw, light golden

Nose/Aroma: Rosemary and slight citrus notes

Mouth/Flavors: This is a light, refreshing summer ale, but the subtle hints of rosemary are what make this beer something special.  It is an easy drinking beer with a dry finish, but it is sophisticated with the herbal rosemary tones and its crisp grassy notes.

Conclusion:  It’s really a perfect summer beer.  Those hints of fresh rosemary add such a nice herbal freshness to the Belgian ale – especially on the scorching 90+ degree afternoon when Andy and I enjoyed it.

The Peekskill Brewery doesn’t bottle so you actually have to head north to try this gem.  They do sell growlers, so thankfully you can take some of Rosemary’s Baby home with you.  The restaurant and brewpub is located at 55 Hudson Avenue and Railroad Avenue up in Peekskill, New York  There is a train station nearby, so you can get there by Metro North’s Hudson line service (from Grand Central to the Peekskill stop).  The restaurant and bar are actually in separate storefronts connected by a hallway which houses their brewery.

If you end up in Peekskill, you should also check out the Birdsall House up the road – a relatively new Westchester gastropub getting great press.  The executive chef is formerly of Chez Panisse. Please check out the story featuring both the Peekskill Brewery and the Birdsall House on beermenus.com.
