Mario Batali & Joe Bastianich Collaborating With Dogfish Head, Russian River Brewing & 2 Italian Brewers on NYC Brewpub
Here’s some great craft beer news to start off the week! This past weekend at BeerAdvocate’s Extreme Beer Fest in Boston, Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head Craft Brewery),Vinnie Cilurzo (Russian River Brewing Company), Leonardo Di Vincenzo (Birra del Borgo) and Teo Musso (Birrificio Le Baladin) announced they are teaming up with Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich to open a rooftop brewpub as part of the much-anticipated Eataly project that will feature a specialty Italian market and restaurants at 200 5th Ave. Here’s a video of the announcement from BeerAdvocate. The rooftop brewery and restaurant will be called Birreria and will house a copper-clad brewing system. According to Sam Calgione of Dogfish Head, the idea is to create an artisanal, old world Italian craft brewery that just happens to be located on a rooftop in Manhattan.
The beers will feature Italian and American ingredients and will be unpasteurized, unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and hand-pulled through traditional beer engines for authentic and pure presentation. The rooftop restaurant project will pair artisanal rustic, homemade beers with the cooking of Batali. Additional Italian and American regional craft beers will be served both at the rooftop bar and within the downstairs restaurants. The four consulting brewers met in Boston this week to brew the first test batch of Eataly beer, an English Mild fermented with Italian chestnut powder (photos above). Expect the Eataly New York to open late summer 2010.
