Wine of the Week (Special Australia Day Edition): Jacob’s Creek Steingarten Riesling 2006
Happy Australia Day! For some fun, boozy specials in honor of Australia Day (which apparently commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 and which is the official national day of Australia), check out our post below (or click here). Instead of reaching for one of our favorite bottles of Shiraz in honor of the holiday, we decided to try out an Aussie Riesling which worked well with our spicy turkey burgers last night. It reminded us of a summer afternoon relaxing on the terrace with a cool glass of white in hand and with our favorite burgers on the grill. So, in honor of Australia Day, Jacob’s Creek Steingarten Riesling is our wine of the week! For our tasting notes….
Wined & Dined’s Quick Tasting Notes
Wine: Jacob’s Creek Steingarten Riesling
Vintage: 2006
Varietal(s): Riesling
Region: Australia’s Barossa Valley
Alcohol: 12.5%
Price: $28
Color/Appearance: Pale lemon, bright golden/straw tones
Nose/Aroma: Light pineapple, lemon zest, nutty (walnut, almond)
Mouth/Flavors: Definite citrus up front- bright, tart lemon and lime. Nice acidity with mineral structure. Peach, banana cream, and a hint of soft butter undertone. Classic Riesling flavors.
Conclusion: Andy and I both thoroughly enjoyed this Aussie Riesling. It does exactly what a Riesling should, and it was a surprising and enjoyable change for us during the cool winter months. We’ll definitely branch out from the German, Alsatian, and Austrian Rieslings that we normally drink and try more Aussie Rieslings in the future. Cheers!

So happy to see you enjoyed the Steingarten Riesling. That’s how I plan to celebrate tonight as well! : ) Happy Australia Day!
