Published by Andy at 12:18 pm under Food & Drink Events

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi Oi Oi!  Also known as Anniversary DayFoundation Day and Invasion Day, Australia Day is the official national day of pride in Australia. Celebrated annually on January 26th, the day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, marking the start of British colonization of Australia.  As if places like The Sunburnt Cow and Bondi Road needed any more excuse to party.  Both restaurants, including the brand new Sunburnt Calf at 226 W. 79th St, are offering a $20=3 Hours of drinking as much as you can or as they like to call it “3 Hours of Happiness.”  They’ll also be serving burgers and steak sandwiches for $3.  But these aren’t the only Aussie parties in town.  We also have The Australian, Eight Mile Creek, Van Diemens, and others.  Check out how they’re celebrating next week….

Eight Mile Creek (240 Mulberry St): Australia Day 2010 festivities starts with a unique Beer and Pie Tasting on Monday, January 25th featuring the beers of Coopers ($35; 7pm).  Tuesday, January 26th is the big one with the party happening both upstairs and down with a Prix-Fixe dinner celebration upstairs in the evening ($39 per person + tax/gratuity; 212-431-4635 for reservations).  Check out the menu here (scroll down).  Look out for Tyrone Noonan from ‘george’ playing classic Aussie music downstairs.  Extended happy hour at the bar from 4-8pm.

The Australian (20 W. 38th St): Kicking things off early with a “Australia Day Weekend Beach Party” on Saturday, January 23rd.  There will be “Aussie Trivia hosted by BBQ Drew De Carvalho”  with prizes at 12pm and 2pm (serving vegemite on toast at the 12pm session!)  There will be Live Music from 4pm with Australia’s own Kylie Edmond.  There will be the Jameson girls, Smirnoff girls and Fosters girls giving away drinks and prizes throughout the whole day.  Come Tuesday the 26th, there will be all sorts of lunch, dinner and drink specials with live Aussie music and Aussie movies on the big screen.

Van Diemens Cafe & Bar (383 3rd Ave):  Celebrating with all day specials on Aussie beers and promotions on Tooheys & Coopers. There will be a wine tasting of Australian wines, sausage rolls & meat pies will be served all day along with FREE tim tams for all!
